Saudi Arabia’s Growth Strategy Fueled by Entertainment Expansion

How Entertainment Is Driving Saudi Arabia’s Next Growth Cycle

Saudi Arabia is accelerating its economic transformation by placing entertainment at the heart of its diversification strategy. A major example is Scopely’s $1 billion acquisition of Turkish gaming studio Pixel Flow, signaling the Kingdom’s serious expansion into the global $100 billion gaming and entertainment market. The move reflects a broader national effort to strengthen non-oil sectors under Vision 2030 by investing heavily in gaming, digital media, and creative industries.

Entertainment and Gaming as Economic Pillars

Backed by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), Saudi Arabia has committed billions to global gaming publishers and developers. These investments aim to position the Kingdom as a global entertainment hub while reducing reliance on oil revenues. According to economic analysts, a sustainable economy requires diversified income streams, and entertainment has emerged as one of the fastest-growing sectors capable of delivering long-term stability.

The national gaming strategy alone is projected to contribute more than SR50 billion to GDP by 2030 and create over 39,000 jobs. Through Savvy Games Group and other subsidiaries, Saudi Arabia is building a comprehensive entertainment ecosystem that spans game development, publishing, and esports.

Building a Domestic Entertainment Ecosystem

Saudi Arabia’s domestic market supports this ambitious push. With 23.5 million gamers — representing 67 percent of the population and 90 percent internet penetration, the Kingdom has strong digital foundations. Female gamers account for 42 percent of players, highlighting the inclusivity of the growing entertainment landscape.

Government-backed initiatives, accelerator programs, and partnerships with organizations such as NEOM and InspireU are empowering local studios and entrepreneurs. Developers now have structured funding, mentorship, and global exposure, enabling Saudi-made entertainment content to compete internationally.

Expanding Entertainment Beyond Gaming

The Kingdom’s entertainment strategy extends into film, tourism, and large-scale events. Hosting the Esports World Cup in Riyadh reinforces its status as a global entertainment destination. Meanwhile, AlUla has become an emerging film production hub, offering attractive incentives to international studios while training local talent.

Entertainment is expected to generate 450,000 jobs and contribute 4.2 percent to GDP by 2030. Major attractions like Riyadh Season continue to draw millions of visitors, strengthening tourism and cultural engagement.

A Long-Term Structural Shift

Saudi Arabia’s focus on entertainment is not temporary. It represents a structural shift toward a diversified, innovation-driven economy. By combining global acquisitions with local talent development. The Kingdom is building entertainment as a sustainable pillar of its post-oil future.
